RECOMMENDED PRACTICES SUBCOMMITTEE
MISSION
This subcommittee is chartered under our parent organization IES Illuminating Engineering Society directly responsible for the maintenance and updating of ANSI / IES Recommend Practices RP-37. The Mission of this subcommittee is as follows:
- Provide for adequately lighted areas where parked aircraft can be safely ground handled and aircraft crew members and passengers may safely board and deplane;
- Provide for adequately lighted access roadway for safety of vehicles and pedestrians;
- Provide direction for planners and developers of other roadways and parking facilities in the vicinity of the airport. All while taking into account the special needs of the airport environment such as height restrictions and possible undo light trespass interfering with air traffic controller and/or pilot vision
If you would like to submit any ANSI / IES RP-37 content change requests please contact standards@ies.org.
VISION
Through the subcommittee’s research and development of standards, such as ANSI / IES RP-37, the subcommittee’s vision is for the industry to follow best practices for lighting spaces and functions involved in the operation of aircraft and spacecraft.

ANSI / IES RP-37
Description: Planning and design of lighting systems for “airside”, some “landside”, and adjacent airport areas, including apron areas for commercial use, general aviation, cargo, hangars, and remote aprons . RP-37 does not provide guidance for aeronautical ground lighting systems. The 2025 update adds new recommendations for airside apron tasks, adjacent areas, uniformity, color rendition, sloping areas, ambient lighting near runways (“control zones”), additional use of task lighting, and consideration of sustainable design.
